Description
Kala Namak is a type of mined salt which is also sometimes referred to as Himalayan black salt. It comes from the Himalayan salt caves, and has a very high naturally occurring mineral content. Despite its name, this salt has more of a pinkish-gray color, and should not be confused with the actually black-colored Hawaiian black sea salt, which is much milder in flavor. Kala Namak has a strongly sulfurous aroma and is best used as an ingredient in recipes or in combination with other herbs and spices as a seasoning blend rather than as a table salt or a finishing salt. Traditionally used as an ingredient in Indian and Pakistani cuisine to heighten the flavor of roasted chickpeas and other snacks, or for sauces like chutney, is also used in vegan cuisine for scrambled tofu, since its sulfurous flavor is quite reminiscent of eggs. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
Available in 1 and 3 ounces.
